To transition from basic wooden boats to functioning mechs, retractable bridges, and automated traps in Roblox Build a Boat for Treasure (BABFT), understanding specialized mechanical blocks is essential. Blocks like Hinges, Pistons, Servos, and Portals form the foundation of advanced engineering in the game.
In this guide, we break down the mechanics, controls, and pro tricks for each mechanical block type.

1. Hinges & Free Rotation Motors
The Hinge Block allows 360-degree free rotational movement around its central pin.
- Steering & Turrets: Mount pilot seats to hinges to allow free steering or tank turret rotation.
- Mech Joint Flex: Place hinges at knee and elbow joints to give walking mechs natural articulation when moving.
2. Servo Motors (X & Y Axis Precision Control)
Unlike hinges which spin freely, Servo Motors rotate to precise angles based on user input from a pilot seat or steering wheel.
- Custom Vehicle Steering: Servos act as power-assisted steering columns for cars, trucks, and custom chassis.
- Dual-Servo Arms: Stacking two servos perpendicular to each other creates full 3D robotic arm movement.
.build files via Butter Hub, dual-servo rotation limits and direction angles are automatically bound and configured 5x faster than manual wiring!
3. Pistons & Hydraulic Extension Systems
Pistons generate linear back-and-forth force, pushing attached blocks out and pulling them back in when triggered.
- Retractable Ramps & Doors: Perfect for secret base doors, airplane cargo bays, and landing gear.
- Piston-Hinge Rotation Modules: Combining a linear piston with an offset hinge converts straight push force into smooth rotational movement.
4. Teleport Portals (Instant Transport & Loops)
Portals allow instant teleportation of unanchored builds, projectiles, and players between matching portal colors.
- Remote Teleporters: Mount a portal onto a moving rocket or car to create a mobile spawn point anywhere on the map.
- Infinite Falling Loops: Face two portals directly toward each other vertically to trap objects or players in perpetual motion.
5. Collision Off Hacks for Smooth Machines
When building compact mechanical joints (like pistons inside tight shafts), turn OFF collision on interior rods using the Property Tool. This prevents mechanical parts from "glitching out" or breaking apart due to Roblox physics overlap!
